Exeter Engineers put the ‘fun’ into fundraising on SOS Day

Around 25 Staff at the Exeter office of global engineering constultancy WPS took part in the RNLI’s biggest fundraising day of the year on Friday 27 January, SOS Day. Volunteers from Exmouth RNLI visited their office to thank them for their generosity.

Engineer, Lucy Jones received an email from the RNLI publicising the day and her team were eager to join others around the country, raising money for the RNLI on SOS Day. Lucy told the lifeboat volunteers of her plans to run both the London and Edinburgh marathons this year for the charity that saves lives at sea, raising money through sponsorship.

Senior Secretary, Liz Jefferiss speaking of the company’s enthusiasm to support charities, said;

‘We try and take part in most charities’ special days when we can. There aren’t many around this time of year and it helps brighten up the office. However, this one means a little bit more to us living so close to the sea.’

To raise money on Friday, staff dressed down in nautical stripes or yellow clothes (like lifeboat crew) and towards the end of the day, held a cake sale. During the SOS Day, staff raised £50.

A cheque for £150 was handed over to Exmouth RNLI which came from the proceeds of a loose change pot from 2011. Staff voted at the end of last year to decide on which charity should win the pot, as they do every year.

Come Rain Or Shine Yorkshire Building Society’s Exeter branch are supporting the RNLI

Yorkshire Building Society’s Exeter branch is on a mission to raise funds for its chosen Charity of the Year, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). To celebrate the launch of their 2012 fundraising, staff were joined by RNLI volunteers from Exmouth lifeboat station as they took part in the charity’s biggest annual fundraising event SOS Day, on Friday 27 January.

Yorkshire Building Society staff kicked off the fundraising by having a dress down day. Each branch will be supplied with RNLI branded souvenirs on regular rotation through their head office, encouraging customers and members to join the fun as they kick off their year of fundraising for the charity that saves lives at sea.

Krissy Pretty, branch manager, said: ‘I am delighted that we have chosen the RNLI as our 2012 Charity of the Year and that we are starting the fundraising by getting involved in RNLI SOS Day. The RNLI ‘s volunteer crews and lifeguards play a vital role in keeping our seas and beaches safe so I’m proud that we will be doing our bit in supporting them and giving something back to thank them for all their hard work.  I am hoping our customers and members of the public in Exeter are going to get behind us in 2012 and help us raise a fantastic amount of money for the RNLI.’

The Yorkshire Building Society – the UK’s second largest building society -  are calling their fundraising campaign Come Rain Or Shine, to acknowledge the fact that RNLI volunteers head out to sea to rescue people whatever the weather. All members of staff at the Society’s branch in the city centre will be undertaking fundraising for the charity which will be added up throughout the year to make one fantastic donation to the RNLI at the end of 2012.

RNLI Exmouth receive two awards to start the New Year

Senior RNLI officials have acknowledged the hard work of local shop volunteers and issued two separate awards in their RNLI 2012 Honours list.

The Chief Executive of the RNLI, Paul Boissier wrote to Margaret Eaglesham, Souvenir Secretary and informed her that both she and her retail team had won awards. Margaret receives a national Silver Badge in recognition of her devoted service with the Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton Guild. This will be presented at a ceremony later in the summer. In the letter, Mr Boissier writes;

‘I am very conscious of all you have done for the Institution and would like to add my own thanks to those of the Council for your loyalty and support.’

The team of volunteers, who work in the new station shop on Queens Drive, are regional winners in the retail category in the RNLI Supporter Awards, 2012. The team headed by Margaret will receive a framed certificate at a regional presentation also later in the year, based on outstanding efforts on behalf of the RNLI.

News of these awards arrived just after a letter from Nigel Jones, Deputy Divisional Inspector of South Division, praising Margaret and her team for their role in Exmouth’s Christmas Cracker. During this community event organised by the Exmouth Town Council, the team raised £610 throughout the day selling souvenirs and Christmas cards for the RNLI.

Kevin Riley, Lifeboat Operations Manager of Exmouth RNLI and Tim Baker, Chairman of Exmouth Lifeboat Management Group are amongst those who have sent congratulations and thanks this week. Margaret commented that she was rather overwhelmed by it all but nevertheless delighted that their efforts had been recognised.

Exmouth RNLI search for Kite Surfer on Christmas Eve.

A coastal search was initiated on Christmas Eve after a local coastguard spotted a kite surfing rig drifting south of Orcombe point, Exmouth. There was no sign of the kite surfer.

The inshore lifeboat George Bearman was tasked at 12.56pm. The volunteer crew retrieved the kite and it was established the kite surfer had used the emergency pull on it to detach themselves from the kite, but the person was nowhere to be seen.

The all-weather lifeboat Margaret Jean was also launched to carry out a search from Exmouth to Straight Point along with coastguards and Portland Coastguard helicopter.

A while later, Brixham Coastguards received a call from a lady kite surfer to say that she had to detach her rig after getting her lines tangled up. Her husband, a fellow kite surfer, had helped her back to shore. She confirmed the make and colour of the kite found and all units were stood down.
